ANNOUNCING: UU AD CONTEST!

Okay, here's the fantasy: some incredibly wonderful person has donated 2.6 million dollars so that we can run one ad promoting Unitarian Universalism, during the Superbowl.

So, get out your video camera, crank up your video-editing software, and let's see what you've got.

Rules/How it Works

1) Create your video advertisement for Unitarian Universalism. It must be 30 seconds long, no shorter, no longer.

2) Upload your video to You Tube.

3) An impartial committee (which will include at least one non-UU) will seek to find the best of the bunch. Criteria: an ad that would entice someone who is not UU (and probably doesn't know what UU is) to seek out more information, and hopefully go to a UU church near them.

4) After you upload your video, come here and put a link in comments. You can do this with your name, anonymously ... whatever.

DEADLINE: SEPTEMBER 2, 2007

GRAND PRIZE: Major bragging rights. And if your ad is truly sublime, truly has the power to change the world ... well, who knows?

I can't decide if I want to submit an entry, or volunteer to be a judge...

Either way, I think this is a great idea.

I'd love to see one based on those MAC vs. PC ads... Great idea LE!

I already had planned to do this, but maybe the deadline will hurry me along. I just found out about this when I emailed the below message to the UUA listserv PR-L (I didn't see it on Websters either - you need PR for this contest!):

Exploring the internet this summer?

The presidential debate has introduced some people to YouTube for the first time. There are more than 10 times as many videos with the
keyword "unitarian" this year as last & a lot of videos about UUism (not all using the keyword "unitarian"). YouTube, blogs, other online
forums (MySpace, wikis, message boards, etc.), & listservs work together to help spread the word about UUism. Please pass this information around to all of your members who might use the internet
and any other UUs you might "know" online.

The hope being: More knowledge about UUism = more UUs &/or UU friends = more justice, equity & compassion in human relations & a better world

I will place instructions about how to share for those who've never done it and links below to some UU videos (if you know of others that are expecially good to pass around, please let us on the UUA's PR-L listserv know or reply to this message or to web[at]dmuuc.org if you don't want to join the listserv).

If you're having a conversation with someone online who might not be a UU, but might be receptive to the idea, you can share either the
link (URL) of the video (you might choose one connected to a topic of conversation) or embed the code to actually show the video there (in the blog, other web forum, or email message). You can assume that anyone who is not overtly on a mission to spread their religion as the one & only right way to believe as someone who might be interested - maybe not to become a UU, but to learn more about it.

Forums are often topic-specific, but there's a growing possibility that there's a video about a topic of interest that could introduce someone to UUism, too.

Next to each video there's a "URL" with a box to copy the link to the video. The link is probably better than the Embed for use in passing on the information in an email, though if you're using HTML email, you can use the embed code (see below). Just click in the box, which should highlight the link and then you can copy it and paste it in your email message or in a blog, message board, or MySpace post.

Next to "Embed" to the right of each video is a box with a code in it, this can be copied and pasted into your blog (if it accepts HTML - most do), MySpace, LiveJournal, etc. If you have a web site, you can put them in the HTML code of a web page. You can even put them in HTML email messages, though if the receiver doesn't have HTML email,
they won't be able to see it.

If you have a YouTube account, which is free, you can "subscribe" to the user's account who produced the videos - next to their username
"From: username" there's an orange subscribe button, so you'll see when they make more. You can also rate the videos and post comments.
Ratings can help to draw attention to UU videos, so please vote high for UU content, even if the quality could be better, to help draw attention to them.

Of course, you can make your own and add them to your church or organizational web site, if appropriate, besides to YouTube. Here are some links:
